Dr. Terrie Modesto, Disaster Grief Specialist
Disaster affected children are often the most impacted with little power or voice to express their pain, sorrow and grief. Special attention needs to be given not only to their immediate needs but longer tern needs such as education, socialization and emotional support.
TERRORISM AND WAR - Advanced catastrophic technology increases destruction & mass fatalities in terrorist attacks & wars. This causes intense disaster grief & loss of assumed well being & safety. Such traumatic grief can last a lifetime to multiple generations in the future.
DEATH CARE SERVICE PROVIDERS - Disaster Mortuary teams, funeral directors, cemeterians & clergy see the worse of human destruction & painful disaster grief of survivors. They must suppress their disaster grief reaction to serve others. This often results in complex disaster grief response.
Special populations such as the elderly & those with physical or emotional disabilities often do not have the necessary support to deal effectively with disaster preparation or recovery issues. Special need individuals can fall prey to unscrupulous persons who take advantage of their circumstances..
National disasters have increased from 79 during 1900-1909 to 2,788 the first 5 years of the 21st century . Many people affected with life altering catastrophes take years to decades to re-establish their lives. Some people never do recover from the pain and grief.
Media specialist often place themselves in dangerous situations to provide important and informative disaster coverage as a public service to those affected by traumatic events. Journalists etc experience disaster grief and need disaster support & care also.
Disasters not only result in catastrophic physical home & work destruction but also social loss to the local & regional community. Long Distant Grief™ and Diaspora Grief™ can affect people all around the world who know people from the area or who use to live / visit that region.
EXTENDED SOCIETY GRIEF- Disasters affect more than just the immediately impacted. The harsh reality of catastrophic loss can also affect individuals and communities regionally, nationally and internationally in such components as security, social interaction, emotionally and financially.
Disaster medical personnel are first line providers that aid and assist victims of both natural and human-caused catastrophic events. Frequently these dedicated medical providers place their own disaster grief on hold for long periods of time for the sake of their patients.
Fire & Rescue / 1st Responders risk life and limb to save the live and property of disaster victims. Their delayed grief runs deep, along with frustration & exhaustion at the challenges of a catastrophic event. Their loved ones also agonize over the possible peril these heroes face.

“Disasters can break bones, shatter homes, disrupt businesses & demolish community resources. These things can be rebuilt.

Disaster grief™ on the other hand can last much longer.  It can  injure emotional well being of communities; devastate the lives of victims & surviving loved ones. It can also hamper society from moving forward for generations to come.
